Hi there!
I’m Matthew Ennis, a 20-year-old aspiring journalist from Liverpool, currently in my second year of an English and History degree at the University of York.
Harnessing my lifelong passion for telling stories and sharing knowledge, I have been lucky enough to write for a variety of publications - including York Nouse, Youth Journalism International, Circulation Magazine, The York Tab and The Mirror - on news, features, opinion pieces, interviews and reviews. This has instilled in me the ability to independently develop articles from devising a pitch to editing and publishing and equipped me with confidence in adapting my writing to an expansive variety of audiences, subject matters and formats. From in-depth analysis on the existential impact of AI and interviews with tech experts on TikTok’s addictiveness, to exploring an evolving media environment through the lens of Sabrina Carpenter’s career: I am inspired by the varied and challenging nature of the career ahead of me. While I’m excited by all the exciting avenues that this could take me down, I find a particular fascination in exploring music, arts, LGBTQ+ issues and popular culture, applying the critical and analytical skills from my degree to these pop culture topics and their intersections with the wider socio political conditions of our time.
Check out my portfolio for inquisitive and analytical writing on society, politics and pop culture!
